I
met Jennifer Lucio roughly a few days after she was born. I was still
a baby myself so I had no idea what having a sister and being a
sister ... especially an older sister entailed. As a child, I discovered
that it mostly meant being outrageously mad at your sister for the tiniest
things but the first and most voracious champion should anyone else begrudge
her. I learned that having someone following you around, taking after
you and calling you "sistuh" can be an enormous pain when you
are young, but in retrospect such a high compliment, however unnoticed
at the time. Now that we are older and Jen has Stepan, I am less the champion
and adolescent adversary and more the friend. I am happy to pass on those
early tasks to Stepan. Let someone else get mad at her for snoring. I
met Stepan through Jennifer when she was a freshman. He quickly became
an addition to her life that I and many members of my family were want
to include on a more permanent basis. My mother once said she wanted one
of her kids to fall in love and marry Stepan so he could be part of our
family. Either Me or Jenny and if it worked out with Danny, well, that
would be okay too. I actually went out with Stepan once ... to the opera
and just as friends but he did buy me dinner so it counts. A date. We
had a lovely time but it was no time at all before I realized that this
man, however wonderful, did not belong to me or anybody else but Jennifer.
I had a feeling that they were both unconsciously waiting for the
right time, that moment ripe for meeting and falling in love with the
one with whom you would want to spend the rest of your life. Two years
or so later they must have been ready. They started dating each other.
Congratulations Stepan and Jennifer!
